Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness, at our hospital, of PROSTALAC in infected total hip arthroplasty.
Materials and Methods: 28 cases of infected THR were reviewed. 18 cases of one stge exchange or resection arthroplasty were excluded. A retrospective analysis was performed on the 10 remaining cases. The male to female ratio was 9:1, and the mean age and interval between the initial operation to diagnosis of infection were 63 years, ranging from 45 to 77 and 26 months, ranging from 6 to 57 months, respectively. The PROSTALAC was custom-made in our hospital in 6 cases, the others being made fro, old removed stems and bipolar liners.
Results: The mean internal between the insertion of the PROSTALAC to final implantation was about 7, ranging from 4 to 12, weeks, with an overall infection cure rate of 80@ (8 to 10 cases). Partial weight bearing was permitted 2 weeks after the PROSTALAC insertion. The average leg length shortening and hip flexion were about 1.5cm, ranging from 0.5 to 3cm, and 65¢ª, ranging from 40 to 90¢ª. 2 cases of recurrent infections were found, maybe due to the poor general condition of the longer duration of infection in the patients. No other complications were noted.
Conclusion: The PROSTALAC, in an infected THR, was an effective treatment method of infection control, and a good alternative when th patient¡¯s general condition was poor.
